Public education event “Energy of the future: from steam to sun”

14.05.2025

To implement NURE Environmental Policy with a focus on Sustainable Development Goal 7 – Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable  and modern energy for all,  BME Department held an educational event for schoolchildren, students and everyone interested.

Professor Oleg Avrunin, Head of Department, gave an interactive lecture on climate change and the role of energy. He gave examples of low-carbon technologies – solar panels, wind turbines, etc. – and explained how energy efficiency helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at NURE.

Demonstration experiments were conducted during the event:

  • “Background of Energy: Steam Engine”. A steam engine model was shown, and its efficiency and environmental impact were explained.
  • “Modern times: solar energy”. Demonstration of solar panels, connection to the device, measurement of energy produced, comparison with traditional energy sources (coal, gas).
  • “Environmental Monitoring”. Working with the Sainlogic FT-0310  WiFi Weather Station: measuring temperature, humidity, air quality, and discussing how data helps to optimise energy consumption (for example, to regulate heating).

The visitors were also offered the Energy Challenge motivational game. The students received cards with scenarios “How to reduce CO₂ emissions at school?” and “How can everyone save energy at home?” and tried to offer solutions using the knowledge and eco-advice they had gained.

The best were awarded with symbolic prizes.

The enjoyable event and lively discussion about the transition from polluting to renewable sources taught energy efficiency, environmental monitoring and called for action through games and experiments.

Such events help promote NURE’s image as an environmentally conscious university.
