The course aims to foster systems thinking in sustainable development, with a focus on integrating environmental considerations into the management of socio-economic systems.
Students learn methods for assessing environmental conditions, quantifying human impacts, identifying environmental risks, and evaluating resource efficiency. Particular attention is paid to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, emissions trading mechanisms, ecological-economic balance models, and environmental monitoring information systems. Laboratory sessions involve working with real-world environmental data. Upon completion, students will be able to develop sustainable development strategies for enterprises, regions, and sectors that balance economic efficiency, social responsibility, and environmental conservation.
The course modules include:
- Decision-making methods in socio-ecological-economic systems, taking environmental constraints into account.
- Comparative identification and multi-criteria evaluation: economic, social and environmental criteria (the ‘3E’ model).
- Tools for information support of SEES management: environmental information systems, GIS, and monitoring platforms.
- Organisational management of sustainable development processes and the environmental component Goal-setting in sustainable development systems: balancing economic growth, social justice and environmental safety.
- A conceptual model for managing the characteristics of social systems in interaction with the environment The role of social and natural resources in public governance of sustainable development.
Training results:
To identify the concepts, algorithms and data structures required to describe the subject area of sustainable development, taking environmental constraints into account; to ensure the decomposition of problems using environmental methods and technologies.
Ability to apply modern approaches and methods for analysis and formalisation in design systems, construct mathematical models of objects taking environmental factors into account, and solve system design problems in the context of sustainable development.
