The course provides a systematic understanding of the architecture, design and programming of smart home systems. Particular emphasis is placed on environmental aspects: reducing the carbon footprint, optimising water, heat and electricity consumption, integration with renewable energy sources, and air quality and resource management. Students learn to create not only a “convenient” but also an environmentally responsible smart home that complies with the principles of sustainable development (Green Building, ESG).

Environmental aspects of a smart home:

Energy monitoring and smart meters (Energy Management System);
Integration with renewable energy sources (solar panels, heat pumps, batteries);
Air quality management (CO₂, VOC, HEPA filtration);
Rainwater harvesting and reuse, “green” roofs;
Reducing energy consumption in standby modes and automatic shutdown of unused zones;
Equipment lifecycle: maintainability, disposal, low-power protocols (Zigbee, Thread, Matter);
A building’s carbon footprint and the role of automation in reducing it;
Eco-scenarios: “eco-night”, “sunny day”, “no people”, “smart socket”.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to take environmental criteria into account when designing smart home systems: energy efficiency, water conservation, air quality and the use of renewable energy; and to apply information technology and AI to forecast energy consumption and optimise the operation of building services systems whilst minimising environmental impact.
