On September 19, 2025, the Department of Applied Mathematics of NURE hosted an open lecture by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor, Professor of the Department of Applied Mathematics of NURE, Senior Researcher at the A.Pidhornyi Institute of Power Machines and Systems of NAS of Ukraine Georgii Mykolaiovych Yaskov, on the topic “Geometric Design: The Path from Idea to Intelligent Systems. The Scientific School of Y.G. Stoyan in Multidimensional Space.” The event was dedicated to the 95th anniversary of NURE, as well as the history and current state of the scientific school of Yurii Hryhorovych Stoyan, the founder of the field of geometric design.
Among the guests were the Dean of the Faculty of Information and Analytical Technologies and Management of NURE, Dr. of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Prof. V.O. Doroshenko, lecturers of the Department of Applied Mathematics of NURE, students of the first (bachelor’s), second (master’s) and third (educational and scientific) levels of higher education in the specialties 113 Applied Mathematics (F1 Applied Mathematics) and 124 System Analysis (F4 System Analysis and Data Science).
The lecture covered:
the historical origins of the school, associated with the Kharkiv Institute of Radio Electronics and the Institute of Mechanical Engineering Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine;
the establishment of geometric design as a separate scientific field in the 1970s, combining mathematical modeling, optimization, and computational geometry;
the formation of the concept of F-functions as the basis for mathematical modeling of geometric object placement problems;
the contribution of Y.G. Stoyan’s leading students to the development of theory and applied applications — from optimization to intelligent systems;
examples of the practical use of geometric modeling;
the methodology for solving packing problems and modern approaches to optimizing the placement of objects were considered;
the final part of the lecture presented an overview of recent research.
