Professor, Dr.-Ing. Birgit Glasmacher is a German scientist and Director of the Institute of Multiphase Processes (IMP) of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University Hannover (LUH, Germany).
Birgit Glasmaher graduated in 1982 the RWTH Aachen (Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen) for mechanical engineering in field of process engineering and had the degree of a graduate engineer. From 1983 she studied Biomedical Engineering at the University of Dundee in the United Kingdom and had a Master of Science degree. She then worked for 17 years at the Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. She had PhD degree (1991) for the calcification of polyurethane biomaterials in the cardiovascular system at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
From 2001 to 2005 Glasmacher was Head of the Department of Cryobiology & Biomaterials at the Helmholtz Institute for BMT of RWTH Aachen University. Since 2006 she has been university professor for multiphase processes and director of the institute of the same name at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University Hannover (LUH).
The special interest of Glasmacher lies in the field of biomedical engineering. Her research interests include biomaterials, functional tissue engineering, biohybrid systems, damage mechanisms on implants and cryogenics. In addition to supervising various procedural and biomedical lectures, Birgit Glasmacher has a key role in the design of the Biomedical Engineering degree program at the LUH
Birgit Glasmacher is committed in many areas to the advancement of women in technical studies, especially in mechanical engineering. In this context, she also carries out projects for and with schoolgirls.

In 2017, Birgit Glasmaher received an honorary professorship (number of Diploma 43) at the Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics (KNURE) in Ukraine for near 10 years support and development of joint projects from BMBF, DAAD, Erasmus + programs with Biomedical Engineering Department (BMI). She has been in KNURE with scientific visits in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2017 years. Scientists of the IMP have been working with the research group of Professor Oleg Avrunin in the scientific field of creating software for the automated processing and analysis of cryomicroscopic and micro-CT images. During this period, 6 IMP scientists visited the BMI Department in KNURE, and 9 students, 3 PhD- students and several scientists from the BMI Department took part in long-term scientific projects with the Leibniz University of Hannover. We hope for great results of future cooperation.
