NURE Researchers Explored Modern Research Laboratories at the University of L’Aquila

17.06.2026

As part of the Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility programme (Project No. 2023-1-IT02-KA171-HED-000138080) implemented between NURE and the University of L’Aquila, Italy, professors of the Department of Biomedical Engineering Yurii Zhohulov and Dmytro Snizhko visited several modern research laboratories of the university.

During the visit, the researchers learned about the activities of the Geotech Lab, a geotechnical laboratory that combines educational, research, and applied activities. The laboratory conducts comprehensive studies of soil and rock properties, performs on-site testing at construction sites, monitors landslides and deformations of engineering structures, and investigates soil–structure interaction under seismic loading.

The researchers also visited the Environmental and Maritime Hydraulic Laboratory (LIAM), which is equipped with specialised hydraulic basins, flumes, and wave channels used to model natural water processes. The laboratory complex features modern computerised systems for measuring water-environment parameters, including pressure, wave height, and flow velocity.

The laboratory’s main research areas include the protection of coastal territories from storms and erosion, the analysis of the stability of port structures and breakwaters, and the modelling of the consequences of extreme natural phenomena, including tsunamis.

The visit to the laboratories of the University of L’Aquila contributes to expanding international research contacts, exchanging experience in the use of modern research infrastructure, and identifying new areas of interdisciplinary cooperation between Ukrainian and European research teams.
