On 25 September, Radio Nakypilo discussed the resilience of telecommunications infrastructure amid Russian attacks and ways to prepare for possible disruptions to Internet access and mobile communications. The programme featured Vitalii Tkachov, PhD in Engineering, Associate Professor and Assistant to the NURE Rector for IT, as an expert.
The discussion focused on technical solutions that can improve the availability of communications during prolonged power outages and damage to telecommunications infrastructure. One such solution is the use of fibre-optic technologies, which can reduce the dependence of access networks on the power supply of intermediate active equipment.
Particular attention was paid to Internet connection redundancy. For home users, one practical approach is to combine a primary wired Internet connection with a mobile network as a backup. Modern networking equipment can automatically switch between communication channels if the primary connection becomes unavailable, thereby increasing the resilience of a home network.
The programme also addressed the use of satellite communications. Vitalii Tkachov noted that satellite systems remain a relatively expensive solution for most household users. Therefore, for the Kharkiv region, a practical approach is to use an available wired Internet connection as the primary channel and a mobile operator’s network as a backup.
The participation of NURE experts in public discussions on telecommunications resilience is an important part of the University’s engagement with society and contributes to the dissemination of practical knowledge in the field of information and communication technologies.
