On March 12, 2026, Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics hosted an offline training workshop for staff from university libraries across Kharkiv.
The workshop, titled “How to Speak Respectfully About Disability: The Role of a Librarian in Creating a Barrier-Free Space,” brought together librarians to focus on inclusive and accessible communication.
The event was organized by the NURE Scientific Library in collaboration with the “NURE Without Limits” Accessibility Service.
During the session, participants discussed the importance of appropriate terminology when referring to persons with disabilities, the “People-First Language” principle, ethical interactions with library visitors, and the essential role librarians play in fostering an accessible, barrier-free environment.
Such initiatives contribute to building a more open, empathetic, and inclusive library environment for all. After all, a barrier-free space begins not only with ramps, but with respect, knowledge, and the right words.
