Eduroam

Eduroam

Thanks to the connection of NURE to the Ukrainian Scientific and Educational Telecommunications Network “URAN”, since March 2025, university employees and applicants have the opportunity to use the service of the international academic network eduroam – transparent roaming of users of the international scientific and educational network.

Eduroam (Education Roaming) is an international project that provides secure and convenient access to wireless networks in educational and research institutions around the world. This technology allows students, teachers and scientists to use their credentials to connect to the Internet at any institution that supports eduroam, without the need for re-registration.

Eduroam is based on RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) technology and IEEE 802.1X protocols, which provide secure authentication of users through their home educational institution. This means that a user, when connecting to a network at another university or research institution, goes through verification at their home organization and then gains access to the Internet.

The eduroam connection process includes the following stages:

  1. The user enters their credentials in the username@nure.ua format.
  2. The authentication request is transmitted via the local RADIUS server to the remote NURE server.
  3. If the credentials are correct, the server confirms access and the user receives an Internet connection at the university that is connected to Eduroam.

Advantages of eduroam

  • Global coverage – eduroam is available in over 100 countries, including universities, research centers, libraries, and conference rooms.
  • Security – using WPA2-Enterprise or WPA3 provides a high level of protection against unauthorized access.
  • Ease of connection – one account works on all eduroam access points without additional settings.
  • Automatic authentication – users do not need to register or enter passwords in new places every time.
  • Free – access to eduroam is free for all members of the academic community.
