[Not] women’s business: how to be a girl in IT?

25.04.2020

Dear girls, if one day you are told that IT technology is not for you, do not even think to take offense at this person. This has nothing to do with reality. We conducted a small survey to find out where the path of the current students of KHNURE began and what words they would pass on to future students.

On the fourth Thursday of April, the International Day of Girls in IT is celebrated all over the world. Although the field of information technology is considered to be one of the most progressive, it is still shrouded in gender stereotypes. Despite this, our University annually accepts hundreds of students who prove by their own example that girls belong in the field of technology.

ANGELINA

– What speciality do you study in?

– I study at “Software Engineering”. I studied at IT Academy from SoftServe with a degree in DevOps Engineer.

– What did you want to become in childhood?

– As a child, I “tried on” a lot of professions, but in high school I decided that I want to work with computers.

– Why did you choose a technical university and IT in general?

The scope of the future, many prospects and development opportunities. I am very glad that NURE provides an opportunity to develop!

– What would you recommend to other girls who want to go to study at a technical university and get into IT?

I advise you to work hard and persistently, and it’s not just about IT. Find what you like and bend your line to the end. It is not so important who is sitting on the other side of the monitor: a guy or a girl, the result of work is important.

– What speciality do you study in?

– I study at the Department of Informatics and at the same time I work as a QA engineer.

– What did you want to become in childhood?

– As a child, I wanted to connect my life with medicine, but in 10-11 years everything changed cardinally, and I decided to connect my life with computing.

– Why did you choose a technical university and IT in general?

– I chose a technical university and specifically the IT sphere for several reasons: first I followed the example of my older brother, who entered computer science at NURE and later became a business analyst. Then at school I began to do well with mathematics and physics, and I decided that it was fate. And then I couldn’t imagine my life without IT!

– What would you recommend to other girls who want to go to study at a technical university and get into IT?

– I would advise you not to be afraid of myths that girls in IT are not so in demand or that girls cannot be cool techies.  Indeed, in history there are a lot of examples to the contrary! Not so many girls study with me, but at work a huge number of girls surround me: from testers and programmers to managing departments. And they are all very cool specialists. The main thing is to like what you do. And NURE is a great start for ambitious IT guys. Both boys and girls.

– What speciality do you study in?

– Я учусь на третьем курсе факультета ИТМ на кафедре «Информатика». Работаю React-developer-ом.

– What would you recommend to other girls who want to go to study at a technical university and get into IT?

– Do not be afraid! Although it seems very complicated, you will succeed. You gradually, semester after semester, will gradually gain new knowledge and more immerse yourself in this area.

Study well.  Not for grades or scholarships, but for yourself. And rather, not in terms of memorizing the theory, but in understanding the processes. This will help you in the future, at work. To not give up.  If it didn’t work the first time, then it’ll work out for the tenth. Each of you will be able to find something to your liking.

In general, the road will be overpowered by the traveler. Set goals and go to them, and you will surely succeed!

– What would you recommend to other girls who want to go to study at a technical university and get into IT?

– Even if nothing is clear, even if it seems like you can never figure it out, even if MATLAB and VISUAL STUDIO seem to be on the verge of fantasy, continue to delve deeply and it will certainly bear fruit!

– What would you recommend to other girls who want to go to study at a technical university and get into IT?

– I would advise you not to be afraid, to be sure, not to doubt yourself, especially if something doesn’t work out and not think that boys are better in this area, girls can achieve just about anything!

But the general result can be summarized as follows: dear girls, do not be afraid to learn something new, do not be afraid to prove yourself and seek new knowledge only because someone doubts you.

The main thing is your self-confidence!

Believe in yourself and welcome to IT!
