24.01.2025

In a significant step toward fostering global climate action, NURE has signed a formal agreement with the Climate Action Network for International Educators (CANIE). This collaboration underscores the university’s commitment to addressing the climate crisis through education, innovation, and cross-border partnerships.

CANIE, a global initiative led by international education professionals, is dedicated to mobilizing the sector to take urgent climate action. The partnership will provide NURE with access to a dynamic network of resources, best practices, and collaborative opportunities aimed at integrating SDG 13 Climate action into education.
“This agreement marks a milestone in our journey toward becoming a leading institution in sustainability. By joining forces with CANIE, we are not only committing to reducing our environmental impact but also empowering our students, faculty, and partners to champion climate action globally.” – said Professor Oleksandr Filipenko, coordinator of Education for Green Transition for Ukrainian Universities, GTUA-EDU project.
By becoming a signatory, NURE has committed to several critical obligations to mitigate its environmental impact and advance sustainability within international education. These commitments include:
  • Reducing Carbon Emissions – NURE pledges to measure, report, and systematically reduce its carbon footprint to achieve net-zero emissions by 2035.
  • Sustainability in Mobility – NURE aims to promote sustainable practices in international mobility, such as prioritizing virtual exchanges and environmentally friendly travel options.
  • Incorporating Climate Education – Integrating climate change and sustainability topics into curricula ensures that students and staff have the knowledge and skills to address global environmental challenges.
  • Encouraging Research and Innovation – Supporting research initiatives that focus on climate action and developing innovative solutions for sustainability.
  • Community Engagement and Advocacy – Collaborating with local communities to drive impactful climate initiatives and advocating for systemic change in the education sector.
This agreement aligns with NURE’s broader sustainability goals, which include integrating climate resilience into its academic and operational strategies.

As a member of CANIE, NURE is the first Ukrainian university to join the growing movement of institutions and professionals working to ensure that international education contributes positively to the planet’s future.
