On December 8-9, the semifinals of the most massive and prestigious programming competition among ICPC students took place. Teams from 9 countries took part in it: Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and Greece.
A total of 130 teams from 65 universities participated. The foreign teams were competing in normal peaceful conditions, while the conditions for our guys were much worse. In order to improve the conditions for the strongest Ukrainian teams, it was decided to organize an additional platform at the Genesis office, for which we would like to express our special gratitude to Alexey Nishchik. And as the results showed, this decision was correct, as the two teams took the absolute first and second places on this site!
The semifinals of the World Championship were attended by 53 Ukrainian teams (29 universities), including 5 teams from NURE. The world semifinals are also the finals of Ukraine, and to participate in it, you had to pass the 1/8 and ¼ stages. Since the competition is very massive, the competition is crazy and in order to get to the ½ stage, you need to study regularly and systematically, study additional in-depth courses related to algorithms, data structures, program optimization, develop teamwork skills and psychological compatibility, stress resistance.
It is very important to support such students, because according to the statistics of previous years, to reach the ½ stage, participants need to start working from school, and if the team wants to go to the world finals and get into the field of view of the giants of the IT industry: Google, Microsoft, IBM, Apple, they not only have to start from school, but also work regularly and hard on weekends, holidays, vacations, and almost all their free time for years. Getting to the world finals, where the best hundred universities in the world are represented today, is hard work, and not everyone succeeds!
Last weekend, our students made a miracle: a young, but very ambitious and motivated team managed to be the first to solve 9 problems and won the semifinals against very strong rivals. Due to the strong growth in the popularity of fundamental algorithmic training, it was decided to hold the European finals for the first time this season, so now large financial resources are being invested in the preparation of European teams.
This is a real feat for the first time in the history of the University, as the team managed to reach the world finals from the first place and was invited as the best team in the region to the first European finals in Prague in March 2024!
Students Kostiantyn Denysov, Valerii Hrynenko and Ihor Barenblat have forever written their names in the history of the University, the city and Ukraine!
