Anatoliy Zagorodny was elected President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

On October 7, the election of the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine took place.  “During the secret ballot, Academician Anatoliy Zagorodny was elected President of the National Academy of Sciences by a two-thirds vote,” the NAS press service said.
Anatoliy Zagorodniy was born on January 29, 1951.  He began to study the specialty “Radiophysics” at the Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics, but in connection with the reorganization of the university in the early 70’s, fourth- and sixth-year students were transferred to the Kharkiv National University named after Karazin.  After graduating in 1972, he worked at the Institute of Theoretical Physics named after N.N. Bogolyubov NAS of Ukraine.  He is currently the Director and Head of the Department of theory and modeling of plasma processes of the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, Professor, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, editor-in-chief of the Ukrainian Physical Journal.  “Condensed Matter Physics”, Professor of Kyiv National University named after Taras Shevchenko, Chairman of the Commission of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on Scientific Heritage of Academician V.I. Vernadsky.

For a series of works on the statistical theory of plasma-molecular systems, together with co-authors, he was awarded the K.D. Sinelnikov Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The works of Anatoliy Zagorodny on plasma physics were awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology (2005).

He has repeatedly delivered plenary presentations at prestigious conferences on plasma physics, is a member of the program and organizing committees of international conferences in various countries.  He was chairman of the organizing committee of the International Congress of Plasma Physics (2004-2006).  Author of more than 200 works, including the famous monograph “Statistical Theory of Plasma-Molecular Systems”.

He was nominated for the post of NASU President in March 2020, his candidature was supported by Boris Paton. The elections of the President of the National Academy of Sciences and the new Presidium of the NAS were scheduled for April 13-17, 2020, but postponed due to the spread of COVID-19.
